What Is Pilates?

Pilates was originally created by Joseph Pilates. His initial ideas have been adapted by different schools over the years, but at the heart of all these techniques are his basic principles.

In Pilates there is an emphasis placed on core stability, alignment, posture and breathing. It aids in: releasing tension from over-tight muscles; rebalancing the body; allowing the muscles to work in harmony and reducing the risk of injury.

Benefits of Pilates

v Improved posture and balance
v Longer leaner body – with flatter stomach
v Relief from back and joint problems
v Increased strength, endurance and co-ordination
v Increased flexibility
v Helps prevent injury
v Increased body awareness

Pilates is not a miracle cure – however with regular practice the results can be seen within as little as 6 weeks, and it can be one way to recover from injury or improve your general fitness and physique.
